Self-help is not real. You cannot help yourself. Your heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure (Jer. 17:9). Isnt that a fun verse. You try to do things on your own, you fail.
Oh, maybe you are saying, hey that is just one verse, and its the OT. OK. How about for out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander (Matthew 15:19). Another fun one, right?
Try and help yourself and you will not succeed. If anyone touts self-help remedies that end with you doing something, they will ultimately fail. If a book tells you its possible to fix something. Nope. If a radio host tells you it can be fixed by you. Nope. If a preacher gives you a pragmatic “to-do” list to have a better life or better job or whatever. Nope.
Any “to-do”, any self help, any thing that you do – it has to begin and end with Jesus. He is the only true fix to anything and everything. It is through Him and in Him and because of Him that we obtain anything.
A book, a host, a pastor can certainly give practical advice on how to “get better” – it just must be wrapped entirely in Jesus to be sufficient.
